An Explanation of Various Aspects of Exposed Aggregate

Posted on: 21 April 2023

Exposed aggregate concrete is an attractive paving surface, and it will improve the appearance of a driveway, patio, or pool deck. It's helpful to know more about the type of concrete you plan to use. So, here's an explanation of various aspects of exposed aggregate concrete.

Exposed Aggregate Can Be Customised

Exposed aggregate is full of colourful stones and pebbles that peek out from the top of the concrete. The best part of this is that you choose which ones to add. You could opt for a mix of blue, white and black, for example. Decide on any combination you want. Other aggregates can be used as well, such as small pieces of coloured glass and sea shells.

The cement itself can be pigmented in various shades. If you want light-toned paving, the contractors can use white cement. Because stones are a natural substance, this concrete has an organic ambience.

The Aggregate Choices Affect the Texture

Exposed aggregate is not only multitoned and colourful, but it has an appealing texture. This aspect is another thing you have control over. If you want the paving to be smooth so you can walk on it in bare feet, choose rounded pebbles. On the other hand, crushed stones are more angular, and they give the aggregate a rougher feel.

Another factor is the aggregate size and the degree to which they're exposed. You can choose how pronounced the aggregates look and how bumpy or smooth the concrete is. Ask your concrete contractor about what might work best for you, which will depend on whether you intend the exposed aggregate for a driveway, a pool deck, or somewhere else.

Exposed Aggregate is Different from Standard Grey Concrete

Exposed aggregate is made from cement and aggregates. While most concrete has sand and gravel aggregates, exposed aggregate paving is different. It has aggregates added specifically to decorate the paving. Plus, after the concrete is poured, the top layer of cement is washed away to highlight the stones and pebbles. Other sandblasting or etching methods are sometimes used to erase the cement so the aggregates pop through the surface.

The techniques used can affect the appearance of the concrete. Some sandblasting methods can dull the colour of the stones. Ask your contractor about the options they typically use and what the results may be. They can probably show you photos of their previous work, which may be on their website.
