3 Reasons to Use Exposed Aggregate Inside a Pool

Posted on: 21 January 2020

When you build a pool, you have to decide which material to use to line the floor and interior walls. While some people opt for traditional plaster or tile, you can also use an exposed aggregate that is a mix of concrete and pebbles.

What are the benefits of lining the inside of your pool with exposed aggregate?

1. Visual Appeal

An exposed aggregate that has pebbles creates attractive surfaces. Its robust concrete core is enhanced by lots of small pebbles. You can choose a uniform shade, a mix of different colours or even stylised designs depending on the style you go for.

While aggregate looks attractive on paths and driveways, it really comes into its own underwater. Light striking the pool will make the inside of your pool shine; the pebbles will stand out underwater. If you want a more striking interior than the norm, then this surfacing gives you a lot of options.

2. Enhanced Grip

Like any exposed aggregate, pebbled aggregate has a slightly rough surface. Some of the pebbles stand proud on the concrete rather than just sitting under its surface.

This roughness gives you more walking traction and grip. You're generally less likely to slip on aggregate concrete than on smoother surfaces.

This is especially useful inside a pool. While you might sometimes find it hard to keep your feet on tiled or plastered floors, the aggregate will keep you upright. If you have kids, then they are less likely to have slip accidents in the water. This boosts confidence if you have a child who is a bit anxious in the water.

If you're worried that this aggregate will be harder on your feet than a smooth surface, then you can adjust the traction. If you choose an aggregate with smaller pebbles than the norm, then you get a smoother and softer surface.

3. Stain Concealment

If your pool has a smooth and plain-coloured internal surface, then it will show marks and stains. Cleaning stains from a pool isn't always an easy or quick job; it's not something you want to have to do too often. So, you may have to live with some staining some of the time.

Exposed aggregate doesn't stop stains from forming, but it does conceal them more. Its textured surface makes marks less obvious. Your pool will look better between your scheduled spring cleans.
